January 08, 2014 ~ Atkins to design major new Caribbean cruise port in the Dominican Republic
Atkins has now been awarded a contract... by D R Cruise Port Ltd to provide comprehensive architectural and engineering design services for an expansive new $65 million cruise port development in the Dominican Republic. The two-berth Amber Cove Cruise Center will accommodate up to two Post-Panamax cruise vessels, or 10,000 people, daily. The site is nestled on the Bay of Maimón on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic near historic Puerto Plata. The new cruise centre, developed by Carnival Corporation, a partner of D R Port Cruise, will serve as the gateway to the province and will seek to increase the north coast's popularity as a vacation destination.
Larry Levis, Atkins' senior program manager, said: "Amber Cove will welcome visitors to the country with retail outlets and themed marketplaces along with dining and recreational amenities. The project will feature design themes that echo the cultural and architectural history of the nation, and particularly of the Puerto Plata region. These themes include architectural styles of three distinct periods: the fortified 16th century, the classical-colonial 18th century, and the Victorian late 19th century."
Atkins is providing complete landside design, comprising architecture and engineering for the project's 25 buildings, as well as its roadways, landscapes, and plazas. A transportation hub will enable visitors to explore the many interesting points of the historic region.
An Atkins team based in Miami, Florida has supported the Amber Cove development since its earliest planning stages in 2011, including support of the environmental permit application submitted for the site. Previously, Atkins created land use and conceptual plans, site diagrams, and cost estimates that assisted Carnival Corporation to evaluate the project.
The facility is currently advancing through the maritime and landside construction phases and is scheduled to open in anticipation of the 2015 winter season.
January 08, 2014 ~ Atkins to design major new Caribbean cruise port in the Dominican Republic
Not a lot of change to see today... because the work is now being done out on the water. The main pier shows a lot of progress and you can see that the main reception area plus the entrance road have been made ready for paving. For some reason a kind of screening material has been placed around everything and I suppose it's mainly to keep people out and away from the work areas. A couple of the shop owners told me today that the first cruise ship is supposed to come in December of this year. That may simply be the rumor but it certainly looks possible by the way they are working. I would say that all is right on schedule. Today was Tuesday, the 15th of July of 1014. All of the photos that I have taken are on this Amber Cove Photo Album link.
There were some restricted areas today... where I could not gain access. However, I did take some new photos and here are six of those photos. I put the rest on the photo album. From the photos it appears that not much has been happening but in reality it is all happening now on the water where I can not take decent photos. It is pretty restricted now but progress has been steady. Plenty of work has been done on the main pier and the channel itself. It appears to me that everything is right on schedule. Today was Friday, the 13th of June. All of the photos that I have taken to date are on this Amber Cove Photo Album link.
If anyone ever thought that this was a small project... they need to think again! Carnival people are moving very quickly with this project. The channel dredge has moved significantly towards the sea and pilings are being driven for the new pier. Trucks are coming and going with materials to keep the machinery working and the workmen scrambling! There can be no question with regards to the promised 2014 opening of this terminal. The whole Town of Maimon has become vibrant and alive with anticipation and for good reason. Not only will this project be good for Maimon but it will be a starting point for North Coast development here in the Dominican Republic. The North Coast is beautiful beyond belief and I believe that this Carnival Project will be the trigger for lots of new developments. Above are some of the photos that I took yesterday, January 06, 2014 and there are more new photos on the complete Carnival Amber Cove Photo Album link below.
I simply can not believe how fast... the Carnival people are moving with this project. The change since I was here last is incredible and it has only been a couple of weeks since I was here! The channel dredge has moved significantly towards the sea and pilings are being driven for the new pier. Trucks are coming and going with materials to keep the machinery working and the workmen scrambling! The whole Town of Maimon has come alive with anticipation and for good reason. Not only will this project be good for Maimon but it will be a starting point for North Coast development here in the Dominican Republic. The North Coast is beautiful beyond belief and I believe that this Carnival Project will be the trigger for lots of new developments. Above are some of the photos that I took yesterday, November 12, 2013 and there are more new photos on the Amber Cove Photo Album link below.
Carnival is making real progress and here are new photos that I just took on the 11th of October. As you can see, there have been many changes since my last photos in August. The ship channel dredging is moving steadily towards the ocean and landscaping has commenced. The whole site is crawling with workers and machinery and the people in Maimon are in a real upbeat frame of mind. There is lots of construction going an along the highway as well in anticipation of the huge numbers of people soon to be arriving. Carnival will definitely be here in 2014 as promised. This is all positive news for the North Coast.
The Dredges are Working! We heard that the dredges had arrived in Maimon for making the bay deep enough for the big cruise ships and decided to go and confirm that it was true. Sure enough, they have now started dredging the bay and ship channel and we were told by people in Maimon that all is on track for the promised opening in 2014 of the Carnival Crusise Lines Terminal. Great for the Dominican North Coast.
Here at >> FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT << you will find the original announcement of the Carnival Cruise Lines terminal in Maimon on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic near Puerto Plata. What follows below here is an update from my personal visit to the site on the 6th of May, 2013 and work is definitely progressing.
This is tremendous news... for the North Coast of the Dominican Republic and is just the tip of the iceberg in my humble opinion. The magnificent Carnival Cruise Lines terminal now under construction in Maimon near Puerto Plata represents great foresight and progressive thinking on the part of the Carnival executive. This happens to be one of the most beautiful areas on the Island but has just now started to be discovered. Many more creative and visionary project will follow Carnival's lead ~ such as this Luperon PUNTA ALMA project. Work is progressing nicely at Amber Cove in Maimon. A brand new secure area for the local fishermen has been constructed and the entire site is now being cleaned and prepared for the actual cruise terminal. Please be sure to see the complete PHOTO ALBUM for this tremendous Amber Cove project. Lovely new commercial buildings have been constructed for the merchants "displaced" from the beach. They have been arranged in a nice commercial plaza which will thrive upon the arrival of passengers from the Carnival Cruise ships. It also appears that all of the roads and streets are being upgraded with curbs and probably pavement as time moves on. There are new business establishments springing up and property prices have already escalated sharply. The area is extremely beautiful and the cove looks like one from a South Pacific travel magazine.
Carnival has been a leader... in designing Caribbean cruise ports, including Puerta Maya at Cozumel; Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos, south of the Bahamas; Mahogany Bay on the island of Roatan in Honduras; and now, at $65 million, Amber Cove Cruise Center on the Bay of Maimon near Puerto Plata on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. The last cruise ship to call at Puerto Plata, says Carnival, was nearly 30 years ago.
As is typical for Carnival's port developments (this one being done with the Rannik family of Grupo B&R), Amber Cove, scheduled to open in 2014, will have room to dock two big ships, mostly from among Carnival's 10 cruise brands, with an estimated daily flow of up to 8,000 passengers and 2,000 crew members.
The 30-acre site will also house a marketplace for Dominican crafts and souvenirs, themed restaurants and bars, and a water attraction, as well as a transportation center for land and sea excursions. Many passengers never stray outside these expanded port facilities, unless they go on a ship-sponsored shore excursion.

Construction starts at Puerto Plata cruise ship terminal...
May 21, 2013 ~ DR1 Travel News Minister of Tourism Francisco Javier Garcia expects the Puerto Plata cruise ship terminal to be completed by December 2014. Work is already underway at the site located in Maimon. Carnival Corporation is building the terminal, a US$85 million investment. Other cruise lines will be able to dock their ships there. Minister Garcia says it will have the capacity to receive at least 4,000 passengers and 1,000 crew at the same time. He said that while the symbolic ground breaking ceremony was held some time ago, the physical work has only just begun.

"This is a glorious day... for the Dominican Republic. It is already being inscribed in the annals of our recent economic history as one of the most significant steps we have taken to assure the transformation and development of Puerto Plata, the northern region, and the entire country. With this cruise terminal, tourism and economic activity in Puerto Plata and the north region will rise to occupy a preeminent regional position in the entire Caribbean, showing that a combination of natural beauty, a supportive government policy, investment by a world-class company determined to put its trust in our country, and above all the quality of our people, are key factors that can secure present and future generations ample growth opportunities in the tourism sector," said President Leonel Fernandez Reyna.
Added Jeffrey Rannik... from the Rannik family/Grupo B & R, "We're very pleased to team up with cruise industry leader Carnival Corporation & plc on the exciting Amber Cove project which will serve to re-establish the North Coast as a major destination for cruise ship visitors. This magnificent facility will not only provide cruise ship guests with a positive shoreside experience but also serve as an economic catalyst for the North Coast and the surrounding region."
"Amber Cove promises to be... a spectacular facility that will serve as a gateway for cruise guests to experience the natural beauty and wonder that makes the Dominican Republic such an attractive tourist destination," said Giora Israel, Carnival Corporation & plc's senior vice president of global port and destination development.
